A fail-safe connection

 ← back...

CENTA will be presenting CENTALINK, a noise-dampening, torsionally stiff shaft that absorbs considerable axial, radial and angular misalignments, at the HUSUM WindEnergy Trade Fair from 09. 13. September 2008. The shaft is now also available in a novel fibre-glass design.

The internationally patented CENTALINK consists of links which are designed for efficiency using flexible bushes for push and pull. Each link has a cylindrical flexible bush which is connected radially to the hub, and a spheroid rubber bush, which is connected axially to the flange. The innovative design offers a highly flexible and easy to assemble link coupling.

The arrangement of the bushes provides a total of four interruptions of sound and vibrations on their way through the shaft resulting in a substantial dampening effect. The flexible bushes allow easy visual checks, in contrast to standard steel multi-disc couplings. In addition, the links can be changed in case of wear without special tools, allowing speedy and uncomplicated installation and repair of the otherwise maintenance-free shaft.

Besides transmission of torque, the stiff CENTALINK can also absorb axial, radial and angular misalignments - due to installation/assembly or operation - with only minor reaction forces, thus reducing stress on the driven equipment side as well as on the driven generator. The shaft has no play and is fail-safe, and, moreover, excels by considerable durability and long service life.

Due to the flexible rubber bushes, the CENTALINK shaft excels with very high electrical insulation values. The degree of insulation is absolutely sufficient for normal applications. If applications require very high insulation values, a new fibre-glass design will be used. The tubes are made of fibre-glass reinforced plastic which will increase insulation resistance to Megohm ranges.

For this novel fibre-glass design, the terminal steel hub is fixed to the fibre-glass tube by a fail-safe agglutinating method. This procedure ensures fivefold static safety to nominal torque. Long and systematic analyses of agglutinating processes and a number of intensive tests on the agglutinated tubes were performed before the method was implemented.

The shaft can be connected to the driven unit by means of a slip hub, the CENTA Torque Hub. In case of torque impulses, e.g. occurring in wind turbines after generator short-circuits, the shaft will slip through the torque hub, protecting connected equipment and thus the complete plant from overload damages. Each torque hub is tested and adjusted at the test bench, and the pertinent slipping torques are recorded in a measuring protocol.

The shaft will be showcased at the HUSUM WindEnergy Trade Fair, 09. 13. September 2008, stand 4C19.

The innovative CENTA couplings and drives have ongoing adaptations to the most recent technical demands and requirements. A wide range of innovations has made the company with its history of almost 40 years one of the worlds leading manufacturers of flexible couplings and drive shafts for industry, ma-rine, and wind power applications.
